Bachelor of Arts and High School Programs

TMI’s Bachelor of Arts program started in 1948 with the agreement between the Institute and the University of Montreal granting them the right to issue undergraduate degrees to students provided they follow a preapproved curriculum consisting of 20 courses covering the areas of philosophy, theology, science, mathematics, history, literature, political science and economics. In the spirit of the Institute, the B.A. curriculum was designed with the aim to foster an intelligent, thoughtful and inquisitive group of graduates.

Since 1974, TMI has been affiliated with Bishop’s University in Lennoxville.

TMI’s High School program was initiated in response to a growing need for high school leaving certificates among Montreal adults, especially veterans and newly landed immigrants following the war in Europe. Led by Veronica Smyth and Kathleen Taylor, teachers of English and Mathematics respectively, the program sought to prepare students for Quebec’s High School Leaving Examinations as set out by the Catholic High School Examination Board. According to records, the program attracted approximately 1200 students in its infancy and included courses like elementary arithmetic, English and Latin grammar, and algebra. It functioned as a popular precursor to TMI’s B.A. program for students looking to pursue further undergraduate studies. The High School program ran from 1950 until it was gradually phased out in the late 60s.
